The Long RidersThis is a featured page

The Long Riders was directed by Walter Hill and was a look at the violent, lawless frontier. It was released in 1980.

Even if you don't like Westerns per se, you will love this movie. It is violent--taking place against a backdrop of post-Civil War border state feuds and clan loyalties--but is a great look at the American spirit of individualism. You will have to make up your own minds about whether or not this retelling of the story of American legends is plausible. We think is it a fine film, because it allows us to take a look at famously-flawed characters without making final judgments about right and wrong for us...

Four sets of acting brothers were cast to portray four sets of outlaw brothers. The Carradine brothers (Keith, David and Robert) had the roles of Jim, Cole and Bob Younger. James and Stacy Keach starred as Jesse and Frank James (and served as executive producers on the film) Randy and Dennis Quaid were the Millers--Clell and Ed, and Christopher and Nicholas Guest were Charlie and Bob Ford.

Jim swings Beth (played by Amy Stryker), still viewing her as a child...

Once again, light shining to beautify KC's facial features...(sighing...)

Handsome Jim bestows an admiring glance on a fellow passenger's wife...

Jim robs and hands out free marital advice...

Aw, turns out Jim was only there to help engineer a holdup!

Such a handsome, charming rogue...

This movie is chock-full of good acting and good-looking men--WATCH IT! (Of course, it goes without saying that Keith Carradine looks AMAZING in it...!)

Watch the great shootout scene after a robbery from YouTube.

Historical Footnote: Jim and Cole Younger were released from prison after 25 years. Jim became involved with a journalist, Alix Muller, twenty-seven years his junior. They wished to marry, but the terms of Jim's parole would not allow it. Alex left the state (Minnesota); Jim allegedly became so despondent that he killed himself. (dexgal thinks maybe it was the last straw for poor Jim--he couldn't eat solid food, couldn't hold down a job, and had fallen out with most of his family!). Check out the James-Younger Gang website for additional tidbits, including who ended up with Jim's violin!

Some additional screen caps--we just couldn't stop looking at KC in this movie (okay, okay, so we is me; can you blame me--dexgal):

James and Stacy Keach as Jesse and Frank James.
David, Keith and Robert Caradine as Cole, Jim and Bob Younger
Dennis and Randy Quaid as Crazy Ed and Quell Miller
Edward Bunker as Earl Chadwell
And Bob abd Charlie Ford Played by Nickolas and Christopher Quest
Amy Stryker as Jim Younger's girlfriend,
Pamela Reed as Bell Starr (Cole's love interest-- altho he continualy calls her a whore.. which is if course -- exactly what she is but ... she's got somewhat of a hart also) She later marries Sam Starr, a Native American gunslinger, which is where she picked up her last name.
Fran Ryan plays the forever longsuffering mother of Frank and Jesse (I don't know why her last name is Samuals ..unless she got married again after her son's father died)
Savannah Smith as Zee --She plays Jesse's wife.
This film is based on the life and times and eventual demise of the James and the Younger boys. Many directors have tackled this subject. This one came when America was in need of a good western. It had been four years since Sam Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid."
The film starts out with Frank and Jesse in the bank along with the Miller boys.
They're bringing the bank employees to their knees, scaring townspeople and pullin' in the spoils when Crazy Ed Quell goes nuts and up and shoots the cashier, something that the James and Younger boys didn't do unless forced ( actual history tells a different story) Cole, Jim and Bob Younger are out in the street fending off intrusions and keeping peace by shooting in the air and scaring the hell out of everyone in the process.
That's their job. They do it well!!
A gunfight ensues inside and people are shot, including Frank James who takes a bullet in the arm.
All get out alive hightail it out of town to a safe place, money in tow
Posse may or may not be on it's way.
Cole and Bob keep an eye out, just in case.

For putting that link to the James / Younger boys website there.... I enjoyed looking at that and it was very informative since there's a relatively new film "The Assassination ogf Jesse james by the Coward Robert Ford." out . This one is much better than The Long Riders... and ya'll probably fall in love with Casey Affleck.. Ben's little brother. He should have taken home the Oscar this year but alas it went to No Country For Old Mens Bardem . Casey Afflect is a revelation, and the kid's beautiful to boot.

I wish I had a link to a photograph of him for you.
